Birthday invitation wording for every age

The short answer

A birthday invitation should say whose birthday it is, the date, the start and end time, the place and how to reply by a set date. Then add only what changes a guest’s plans: drop-off or stay, siblings, gifts, food allergies, dress or a surprise. Match the tone to the person being celebrated, not the size of the party.

What should a birthday invitation say?

Lead with the guest of honour, and the age if it is part of the fun, then the day, date, start and end time, and the full address. Close with a reply-by date and one way to reply. Anything else, from parking to gifts, goes underneath on a short line of its own.

  • Who: the name as friends use it, and the age for children and milestones.
  • When: the day and date, plus an end time. Parents plan pick-ups around it, and adults plan babysitters.
  • Where: the full address, with parking or a buzzer number if guests will need it.
  • Reply by: a date about a week before the party, so you can confirm food and numbers.
  • Extras, one line each: a theme or dress, gifts, food, and anything guests should bring, such as swimwear.

How do you word a kids’ birthday invitation?

Write it to the parents, keep it short, and answer their practical questions up front: is it drop-off, can siblings come, when is pick-up, and is food served. Ask about allergies on the invitation itself, so you hear about them before the cake is ordered rather than at the door.

Drop-off or stay is the question parents ask most, so say it plainly. For children under five or six, many hosts expect a parent to stay; from school age, drop-off is common.

  • Drop-off: give the pick-up time and a number to reach you during the party.
  • Stay: say whether there is food or coffee for the grown-ups.
  • Siblings: welcome them, or say kindly that space is limited.
  • Allergies: ask parents to mention them when they reply.

Zoe is turning 6. Join us for a bouncy-castle party on Saturday, May 16, from 2 to 4 pm at Maple Park Community Hall. Drop-off is welcome; pick-up is at 4. Please reply by May 9 and tell us about any allergies.

Siblings are very welcome. Just add them when you reply, so we have enough cake.

We only have room for the class this time, so we can’t fit siblings. Thank you for understanding.

How do you say no gifts on a birthday invitation?

Say it once, warmly, near the end, and give a reason only if it helps. “Your company is the best present” works at any age. If you would like something in place of gifts, such as a book swap or a donation, name one clear option rather than a list of choices.

No gifts, please. Your company is the best present.

Instead of gifts, bring a wrapped book from home for our book swap. Every child goes home with a new one.

In place of gifts, Hannah would love donations to the Riverside Animal Shelter.

Leaving gifts off the invitation altogether is also fine. For a child’s party, most guests will bring something unless you say otherwise.

What do you write on an adult birthday invitation?

Adult invitations can be looser in tone, but they still need a time, a place and a reply date. Say whether it is dinner, drinks or a full party, whether partners are invited, and who is paying if it is at a restaurant. That last line saves an awkward moment when the bill arrives.

Drinks for Marcus’s 34th. Friday, March 6, from 7 pm at The Copper Room, upstairs. Come for one or stay till close. Reply by March 1.

Dinner for Meera’s birthday at Saffron Table, Saturday at 7:30 pm. We’ll each cover our own meal, and the cake is on us.

Partners are very welcome. Please add them when you reply.

Milestone birthday wording: 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th

Milestones usually mean a bigger list that mixes friends, family and colleagues, so give more notice, often four to six weeks, and more detail: the dress code, whether there are speeches, and whether children are invited.

Thirty, finally. Join Daniel for dinner and dancing on Saturday, September 19, from 7 pm till late at The Glasshouse. Cocktail attire. Reply by September 5.

Please join us in celebrating Anita’s 50th birthday with dinner on Saturday, October 10, at 7 pm, Harbour View Restaurant. Kindly reply by September 26.

Our dad turns 60. Join the family for lunch and a few stories on Sunday, April 12, at 12:30 pm, at our home. Adults only, please.

In many South Indian families a 60th birthday is marked with Shashtiabdapurthi, a ceremony in which the couple renew their vows. Word it like a small wedding: the ceremony time first, from the muhurtham, then the meal.

How do you word a surprise party invitation?

Put the surprise in the first line so no one misses it, then give an arrival time 15 to 30 minutes before the guest of honour is due. Say who is organising, how to reply without alerting them, and where to park. Check it isn’t going to a shared family inbox or group chat.

Shh, it’s a surprise. We are throwing Arjun a 40th he knows nothing about. Please arrive by 6:30 pm; he gets here at 7. Park on Elm Street, not in the driveway, and reply to Kavya, not Arjun.

Keep it quiet: Grandma thinks we’re just coming for tea. Family lunch for her 80th, Sunday at 1 pm. Arrive by 12:30.

Sending it and collecting replies on Nimanto

On Nimanto, guests reply Yes, No or Maybe on the invitation itself, with any plus-ones you allow and a note for allergies or dietary needs. Setting how many extra guests each family may add suits siblings. See what guests are asked.

Replies land in your dashboard as they arrive, and an automatic reminder can go to anyone who hasn’t answered. Start an invitation when you are ready.

Questions people ask

How far in advance should you send birthday invitations?

For a child’s party or a casual adult birthday, send invitations two to three weeks ahead. For a milestone birthday, a surprise party or anything that involves travel, allow four to six weeks. Ask for replies about a week before the party, so you can confirm food, seating and party bags.

Do you have to invite the whole class to a birthday party?

Many schools ask that invitations handed out in class include everyone, or all the boys or all the girls. If you are inviting only a few close friends, send the invitations privately to parents instead of through school, and keep party talk out of the classroom so no child feels left out.

Should a kids’ party invitation have an end time?

Yes. An end time tells parents when to collect their child from a drop-off party and how long to plan for at a stay-and-play. Two hours is common for young children. Without an end time, parents have to message you to ask, often while the party is in full swing.

How do you ask guests to RSVP for a birthday party?

Give a reply-by date and one way to reply, such as a link, a phone number or an e-mail address. A date about a week before the party works well. For kids’ parties, ask parents to say how many children are coming and to mention any allergies in the same reply.
