A short guide
Customs vary, so the invitation should say. If you are hosting, the meal is usually on you. If friends are organising a dinner where everyone pays their own way, write that on the invitation and mention the kind of restaurant, so guests can judge the cost before they accept. Many groups also cover the birthday person.
Address the invitation to the guest by name and add a gentle line such as “We’ve kept this one to close friends, so it’s just you this time.” Most people understand, especially for a restaurant table. If someone asks to bring a partner, a friendly reply about space is enough.
Two to three weeks is usual for a dinner or a night out. Give three to four weeks for a Saturday in a busy season or a party with a booked venue. If guests need to travel or arrange childcare, send a short save the date earlier and the full invitation later.
Only if the person being celebrated is happy to share it. Many adults prefer to leave the number off unless it is a milestone they want to celebrate. When in doubt, ask them. You can always lead with a line about the person instead of the number.
