For the graduate: photos, the ceremony and the party after, and a reply card for the family.
A short guide
Send them three to four weeks before the party. In the busiest weeks of graduation season, families compete for the same weekends, so earlier is better. If relatives will travel for the ceremony, send a save the date as soon as the ceremony date is published by the school.
An announcement tells people the graduate has finished, often with the school and degree, and asks nothing in return; it does not oblige anyone to send a gift. An invitation asks guests to attend a party or ceremony and includes the date, time, place and how to reply.
Write the graduate’s name, the school or degree and the class, then the party date, the time or open-house window, the address and a reply-by date. A photo and a line about what comes next make it personal. Note parking and whether younger siblings and friends are welcome.
Guests often bring a card, and many include money, a gift card or something useful for the next step, but it is not required. Hosts should not ask for gifts on the invitation. A sincere card with a note of congratulations is always appropriate.
