A short guide
Send save the dates six to twelve months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, a holiday weekend or many guests travelling from abroad, aim for nine to twelve months. Sending them earlier than a year ahead risks guests forgetting, and later than four months leaves little advantage over the invitation itself.
Your names, the wedding date and the city or venue, plus a line such as “Formal invitation to follow”. Add a wedding website if you have one. Leave out the time, the reply card and registry details, which belong on the invitation once the plans are final.
No, but they are wise when guests need to travel, take time off or book hotels, or when the wedding falls on a busy weekend. For a local wedding with a short engagement, many couples skip them and send the invitation a little earlier than usual.

Yes. Digital save the dates are common and practical, since guests can keep the link and add the date to their calendar. Many couples send save the dates digitally and decide later whether the invitation will be printed, digital or both. Grandparents and elders may still appreciate a phone call.
