Housewarming invitation wording and etiquette

The short answer

A housewarming invitation needs the new address, the date and either a start time or an open-house window, plus parking, a buzzer number or anything else that helps guests find you. Gifts are optional and rarely mentioned. For a Gruhapravesam, give the puja time first, then the meal, and invite elders personally before you send.

What should a housewarming invitation include?

Start with the new address in full, since most guests have never been there, then the date and time. Add how to get in and where to park, whether children and pets are welcome, and a reply date if you are serving a meal. One line on the occasion, such as a first home, is enough.

  • The address, with the unit number, floor, gate code or buzzer.
  • Parking: on the street, a visitor lot, or the nearest transit stop.
  • Food: a full meal, snacks and drinks, or a potluck.
  • Shoes: if your home is shoes-off, a gentle line saves guests a surprise.
  • A reply date about a week ahead, even for a casual party.

How do you word an open-house invitation?

Give a window rather than a start time, such as 2 to 6 pm, and say that guests can drop in whenever suits them. Mention when food will be out if it matters, and still ask for a reply, so you know roughly how many people to expect across the afternoon.

We finally have our own front door. Drop in any time between 2 and 6 pm on Sunday, September 27, at 18 Birch Lane. Tours on the hour, snacks all afternoon.

Come and see the new place. Open house on Saturday, 1 to 5 pm, Apartment 4B, 210 River Street. Buzz 4B at the front door. Kids and dogs welcome.

Do you mention gifts on a housewarming invitation?

Usually not. A housewarming is a welcome rather than a gift-giving party, and guests tend to bring something small, such as a plant, flowers, wine or a treat, anyway. If you would rather they didn’t, a light “no gifts” line is fine. Leave registries off a housewarming invitation unless friends ask.

No gifts, please. Bring yourselves and an appetite.

Nothing to bring but your favourite takeout menu for the new neighbourhood.

If you’d like to bring something, we are starting a book corner, and your favourite read would be perfect.

When should you have a housewarming, and send the invitations?

Most people host within the first few months of moving, once the boxes are gone, though there is no deadline. Send invitations two to three weeks ahead for a casual party, or three to four for a dinner. A Gruhapravesam follows the date and time the priest gives, often before the family moves in.

  • Weekend afternoons suit open houses; evenings suit dinners and drinks.
  • Inviting new neighbours is a friendly way to meet them. A note through the door works as well as a link.

What is a Gruhapravesam (griha pravesh)?

It is the Hindu ceremony for a family’s first formal entry into a new home, called Gruhapravesam in many South Indian families and griha pravesh in North India. The date and time are usually fixed by a muhurtham from a priest, and the ceremony often begins early in the morning, before the meal.

Rituals vary by family and region. Many include a Ganesh puja, a Vastu puja or havan, entering with a kalash, and boiling milk until it overflows as a sign of plenty. Some families also hold a Satyanarayana puja.

  • Put the puja time first and the meal after it. Guests who can’t come at dawn can still join for lunch.
  • Invite elders personally. Many families call or visit grandparents, aunts and uncles before any message goes out, then send the invitation as the written record of the details.
  • Say if guests should dress traditionally or remove their shoes. Many friends new to the ceremony will be glad to know.

Questions people ask

How soon after moving in should you have a housewarming?

Most hosts throw one within one to three months of moving, once the boxes are unpacked and the main rooms are set up. Later is fine too: a housewarming six months on is still a welcome invitation. For a Gruhapravesam, many families hold the ceremony before moving in, on a date their priest gives.

Is it rude to ask for gifts on a housewarming invitation?

Asking for gifts on a housewarming invitation is generally seen as poor form, because the party is a welcome rather than a gift occasion, and guests often bring something small anyway. If friends ask what you need, answer them directly. A “no gifts, please” line, on the other hand, is always fine to include.

What time should a griha pravesh invitation give?

Give the exact puja time from your muhurtham, since the ceremony starts on it, and the meal time separately. Many ceremonies begin early in the morning. Guests who cannot attend the puja often come for the meal, so showing both times lets each guest choose the part they can manage.

Who should you invite to a housewarming?

Invite the people you want to see in your new home: close friends, family and often new neighbours, which is a good way to meet them. Colleagues are optional. An open-house window makes a longer list easier to host, because guests arrive at different times rather than all at once.
