A short guide
Popular choices are 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (“Love is patient, love is kind”), Ecclesiastes 4:12 (“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken”), Ruth 1:16 (“Where you go I will go”), Song of Songs 3:4 and Colossians 3:14. Choose one that means something to you both and quote it briefly.
Traditionally, “the honour of your presence” is used when the ceremony takes place in a church or other house of worship, as a mark of reverence. “The pleasure of your company” is used for ceremonies elsewhere and for receptions. Many couples now use whichever wording suits them, but formal church invitations still keep the distinction.
A Catholic invitation often names the sacrament, for example “request the honour of your presence at the Nuptial Mass uniting their daughter Clare and James Murphy”, followed by the church, date and time. If the wedding is a ceremony without Mass, “the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony” or simply “the marriage of” is used.
Yes. Give the church’s name and address with the service time, then the reception venue and time on a separate line, or on a card of its own if only some guests are invited to it. Guests should be able to see at a glance where to go first and where to go next.
