Splashes of colour for a Holi party: when, where, what to wear and a reply card.
A short guide
Give the date, time, address and a reply-by date, then the practical notes: wear white or old clothes, bring a change of clothes, and whether colours are dry or wet. Say if colours are provided and skin-safe, what food and drinks to expect, and whether children are welcome.
White is traditional because the colours show brightly on it, but anything old that you do not mind staining works. Choose comfortable clothes that cover the skin, and closed shoes you can get wet. Oil in the hair and on the skin beforehand helps colours wash out more easily.
Holi is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna, which falls in February or March. The bonfire of Holika Dahan is lit on the evening before in many communities. The exact date changes each year, and many hosts outside India hold their party on the nearest weekend.
Use skin-safe, plant-based colours, keep them away from eyes and mouths, and have water and towels ready. Remind guests to ask before colouring anyone, and give children a separate area. Suggest a pouch for phones and sunglasses, and keep a covered space where guests can rest or change.
