A short guide
Send them two to three weeks before the party. Costumes take time to plan, and the weekends around 31 October are popular for parties, school events and trick-or-treating. If you host on the weekend before Halloween, make the date clear so guests do not confuse it with the night itself.
Say it near the top in plain words, such as “Costumes required” or “Come in costume, no exceptions.” If you have a theme, name it. If costumes are welcome but not essential, write “Costumes encouraged”. Mentioning a prize for the best costume gets more people dressing up.
Include the child’s name if it is their party, the date, start and end times, the address, whether parents stay, and whether there will be trick-or-treating. Ask about food allergies, suggest costumes that are easy to move in, and mention anything to bring, such as a bag for sweets or a torch.
Give the date, start time, address and a reply-by date, then the fun part: the theme, whether costumes are required, any contest and what drinks or food to expect. A playful opening line suits it. Say whether guests may bring a friend, and whether the night runs late.
